How I Make Money Online

By Expert Author: David Ferrers

Nothing beats the excitement you feel when you first start to make money online. Ever since I got my first computer I had dreamed of owning a web site that would make money for me.
My motivation has always been simple. I want the freedom to live life on my own terms. To be able to do what I want when I feel like it. I want to feel the security of having a regular income. And, finally I want the spending power to be able to buy what I want and go where I want. Not much to ask.
I now know that I went by the long route when I set out to learn how to make money online. I wasted an enromous amount of time, energy and money on learning things I didn't need to know and doing things that are a complete waste of time.
The most annoying thing of all was that the know-it-alls who are reaping the amazing rewards of their success are so poor at showing others how they do it. However, they are very good at charging a lot for their information and then making it hard to understand what they mean. So I made up my mind early on that I would never charge for any information that I pass on to others about how to make money online.
Here are the lessons that I have learned. I consider that they are the real secrets of making money online.
First, start with a niche market. I know this is different from how people do things in the real world, but in cyber space this is the best place to start. The easiest way is to pick on a group of people just like you. People with whom you share a problem.
Second, find a product that solves their problem. There are millions of them out there. I show my students how to find them on my free diploma course.
Third, build a really simple, one page web site. Your site only needs to offer a product that solves a problem to the people with the problem.
Fourth, drive traffic to that web site.
Imagine my excitement when, by simply applying this formula, I started receiving e-mails saying: "Congratulations, you just made a sale!"
The excitement grew when I went to my online bank account and saw the money sitting there, right under my name.
And the excitement reached fever pitch when the 'congratulations' e-mails started coming in ever-increasing numbers.
My advice is simple; don't wait, use the simple formula I've outlined above to build yourself a web site today. Let me show you how. I promise that you will feel massively uplifted when you too start to make money online.

Email Marketing 101

By: Shane

There was a time that if your business wasn't an internet business, then you didn't need to worry about using e-mail for marketing. My friends, those days are gone. Nearly any business can benefit from using e-mail to engage their target market. If you're not using e-mail to actively market your business, you're missing out on one of the most cost effective means to not only gain new customers but to retain current ones. Additionally with e-mail marketing, you can enjoy greater flexibility by tailoring your message to a particular group of your customers and greater tracking ability to determine the effectiveness of your marketing campaign.
Where do I start?
You need to begin collecting e-mail addresses from your customers at every opportunity and there are a number of ways to do this. You could have a sign up form at the register or put a sign up form on your website. You could also hold a drawing for a prize and ask for their e-mail as a part of the entry form or just ask for their e-mail address as a part of any other paperwork they need to fill out for you. You can segment then your customers into different groups, if applicable to deliver a different message each category.
What do I say?
Email newsletters need to be relevant and compelling. They should pass along unique information of interest to your readers. It may be special promotions or prices, product recommendations, and reasons to come to your business. Like any good sales presentation, there should be a call to action for the reader.
Email newsletters should be sent on a regular basis so that readers will come to expect them. One of the biggest mistakes in email marketing is sending information that isn't of value to the reader. Put yourself in their shoes. "If I were receiving 100 e-mails per day, would I be glad to receive this message or annoyed?" Make it worth their while!
An example of very successful email marketing is done by a local day spa. They send out an email to subscribers called "Rejuvenation On A Budget" that advertises discounted services for a day where their schedule isn't full. These promotions sell out quickly because they have a loyal readership that is always glad to get pampered and get a good deal at the same time. The spa gains a full schedule of paying customers for a day when they would have had to pay their employees anyway.
What about the law?
The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 provides for penalties for abuses of email marketing, but a legitimate business can easily comply. It requires that you give recipients an opt-out method, that you identify yourself as a business, that the subject line not be misleading, and that you provide the postal address of your business.
I'm not very technology savvy – should I bother?
Yes! There are a number of services that offer CAN-SPAM compliant e-mail solutions at very low or no cost. A quick internet search for "email marketing" will give you a start. Many of these companies also provide easy to use on-line tools for developing eye-catching e-mails with the use of templates, photos, etc. and they don't require any programming knowledge. Additionally, most also provide sophisticated tracking data which tell you how many e-mails were opened and by whom, which links were clicked on the most, whether anyone forwarded the message, and whether anyone opted out. This data can help you to evaluate the effectiveness of your campaign as well as fine-tune it for the next time.

Here's why. More and more people are joining affiliate program because it's very easy to get started and you can join for free. No risks involve at all. This means there will be more and more competition each day. If you happen to be an affiliate, you find yourself competing against hundreds or even thousands of people with the same product you're trying to sell online. So, you need to find ways to outwit them and blow your competitors away.
The solution is simple; you need to get a good affiliate marketing tips so you can start to make money online with affiliate program. Usually these tips will come in the form of affiliate marketing EBook. You can find a lot of affiliate marketing tips these days, but are they really useful? You need to choose wisely because some tips are not really useful and there are sometimes outdated. There are three important things you need to know as an affiliate which is conversion rates, how much is your commissions and traffic generation.
You need to learn to how to choose a product which has high conversion rates to sell. If the conversion rates are too low, you'll find it hard to make any sales and make money online with affiliate program. For example, if you only get 1 sale for every 200 visitors in the product you're going to sell, you need to get 20,000 visitors just to make 100 sales. Hard isn't it? Secondly, try to get your amount of commission as high as possible. Traffic generation is the most important thing to help you to make money online with affiliate program. If you can't get any decent traffic, you can't make any sales and this means no money into your pocket.
There are many ways to generate traffic on the internet. But there's a few effective ways to generate traffic online as an affiliate marketer. One of the best strategies is writing articles. Don't worry; your English need not be as good as a professional article writer to write an article. It's simple to write a 'good' article once you get tips on writing articles. Trust me.

The Tips For Making Money Online Part 2

By: Tsuyoshi E. Suzuki

Remember: The biggest reason most people don't make money online is that they never get started. A crucial step to make money online is driving targeted and qualified paying traffic to your website. The lesser the competition for the specific keyword, the higher the chance of your site to get to the top of the search engines and the chance to make money online is significantly increased. Another way to make money online is to become involved with email marketing or search engine marketing. With today's technologies, all you need to make money online is an 'interest', like a hobby, a skill, a passion, or a just general topic that you have interest or expertise in.
Traffic / Keyword
Your need to have good traffic to make money online an in order to do that, you need to know which keywords to use as the best. Once you have them, you also need to know if those keywords are working for you, or if you will need to tweak them to get better results. So, keywords are a great topic to understand. You need to become a member of famous Directory like Google and Yahoo. Using service of Google called Adsense, you have to add your ads, details or article related to keywords in the content of your site for example "Make Money Online". Then you search on Google for "Make Money Online" search term and see how many websites are competing on the keywords. For every click thru, you will make some pennies depending on the keywords. Some keywords might give you higher rank than the others. Your site's ranking on the search engines will depend on how optimized it is with the keywords you choose and the number of competition it has. Good keywords are the key to any good internet business marketing campaign as can be seen below. The better the keywords chosen the more money you will make online.
Search Engine
Yahoo and Google are the top two sites where most of the web searches come from. Yahoo's directory, the Google Directory, and the Open Directory Project (dmoz) are web directories -- essentially subject indices. Search engine traffic is the one referred by search engine result page (SERP) like Google or Yahoo. Experts estimate that Google account for 45% of the searches while Yahoo gets 30%. Google, Yahoo and MSN are the top search engines to date. Another way to make money online is to utilize an auction website such as Ebay or Yahoo Auctions to sell unwanted merchandise that you own to others using the internet as a tool to do so. But it is only possible, if your website or blog is optimized for your visitors who are looking for quality information and for the search engines. I recommend advertising mainly with the larger, more reputable search engines to get the best traffic to your website.
Conclusion
Search Engine is ideal for websites with thousands of web pages. As I said in the part 1 already that, in many ways, starting a make money online business is no different to starting an off line one but online is a lot easier than you think. Ways to make money online is the same as addition and bandage a search clamp and again heave without nook, knock. The key to make money online is knowing how and where to start. Today I know that the challenge for anyone trying to make money online is figuring out what opportunity can make a difference for him. Although generating online traffic is an important goal of any website, attention should always be directed to the very first and most important issue in website marketing: targeting online customers. In summary, I believe that to make money online is not that hard.

Tips For Making Money From Home On The Internet

By: Colin Johnson

Stop right now if you're not serious about making money. This article is only for people who are desperate for a better lifestyle, and tired of their present hours, conditions and wage. Wouldn't you love to give the kids the best education possible, live in your dream house, drive your favourite car and see more of your family? I believe that all this and more is possible with work at home internet businesses. These tips are designed to steer you toward a better lifestyle and big money.
Ebay is the largest market place on the internet. I know lots of people making money from this amazing market place, all using different methods. A friend finds bargain items at op shops and local garage sales and re-sells them on Ebay. Others arrange an ebay shop which deals in new stock purchased in mass and sold at competitive prices. The disadvantage of these methods is that you have to arrange and pay for postage and you have to find room to stock and store the products. (I've spoken to two different husbands who are getting tired of their whole house beginning to look like a warehouse!) Better still, you can sell digital information. Digital information is actually the biggest selling item on the internet. It is delivered instantly with the push of a button. How good is that! I advise checking out Ebay to see which items sell well before you decide on anything else. Your research will pay off!
When considering any new business, you need to do your due diligence. That means research, read, ask and take in all the information you possibly can before you make any decisions. There are very many internet businesses advertised on the internet and some are better than others. Look for stories of real people who have found success in the business you are considering. Perhaps you could ask for the contact details of someone local so that you could talk to them in person? There are some companies out there I wouldn't touch ever, but knowing those exist does not diminish my enthusiasm for the good ones. More millionaires have been made by the internet this millennium than can be recorded. Maybe you'll be the next!
A key element of a great work at home internet business is one that doesn't push you into rash immediate decisions and allows you time to do your homework. Another is a business that has a great product that you know sells on the internet. Make sure you take a good look at the product and research whether it is of value to people. Personally I would recommend that it should be a high price item with a high profit margin. This radically reduces the amount of sales you need to make to actually make some quality money.
An effective work from home online business that you can buy into should definitely be one that gets you up and live on the net in a short period of time. My first internet business took me hundreds and hundreds of hours and offered very little support. I had to do all the hard work. However, my best online business was almost all done for me. In fact, I had an amazing quality website up within a few hours! Which did I prefer? I'll let you hazard a guess.
Perhaps you have already decided that a work at home internet business is for you. If so, consider exactly what you want in terms of family schedule and lifestyle. You don't want to find yourself working long, long days and nights and barely making a living as this defeats the whole purpose of making the change. I know plenty of people now you have traded their former 50 hour a week job for an internet business in which they need work only 20-30 hours a day, and they're making a mint! They can now spend more time with their spouses and family etc, and this is afterall what most people want.
Look for a money making online opportunity that requires the skills you possess. In all business you will learn along the way and acquire new skills, however, if a online program for instance necessitates you to have the ability to build a website from the ground up and you don't know the first thing about that, stop and look elsewhere. There is a great scheme out there for you that will suit your skills. Be diligent and patient in finding the right one that is aligned to your skills.
Perhaps you feel like you wont need much support once you've nutted out the details of the business. Wrong! Internet business has many wonderful advantages (and I'm the first to sing its praises) but one of its disadvantages is the sense of isolation that you can feel if you do it alone. A good business will recognise this and will provide for you ample support, not just email support but conversational support by real people, in your country, through phone calls, business conference calls, skype, and maybe if you're really lucky, personal meetings. Use these opportunities to bounce ideas off others who are experiencing all the same teething problems you might be experiencing, and glean wisdom from those more experienced than you in the business.

Top Ways To Make Money Online Right From Your Home

By: Roger Gradowski

The internet is presenting significant opportunities to earn income directly from the comfort of your own home. However the path to making significant money online does require a commitment on your part. Here are a couple of the top ways money is being made on the net.
Make Money With Affiliate Programs:
This is most likely the most widely used approach to earn income from the internet as there is little time and money required in order to start. With affiliate marketing you will be selling products or services created by others for a commission on each sale.
The obvious benefit to this is that you do not need to spend the time and money to create your own product. The challenge can be to select the right kind of affiliate program to start with. It is important to pick a suitable program that is reputable and has a good track record.
Affiliate networks are often the best place to go to look for quality affiliate programs to join. Commission Junction, Clickbank and Azoogle are some of the more common affiliate networks and they all contain some very good affiliate programs that you can choose to promote.
Clickbank can be a great place to start since it is very easy to begin as there is no approval process. All you need to do is select a program and then create your affiliate link and you are good to go. The other networks will usually require you to create a site focused on that program in order for you to qualify for their affiliate program.
Once you have selected your affiliate program you then need to focus on promoting it. I highly recommend that you create a website or at least a blog to help promote your affiliate products. Hostgator is a cheap web hosting company so get an account with them and register a domain name that targets the main keyword of the niche you are in.
For example, if you are in the 'mortgage' niche then your main keyword might be 'mortgage refinancing' so get a domain name that has that term in it. Make sure to regularly add original content articles to your site and add your affiliate links at the end of those articles.
Writing and submitting articles may be the best way to promote your site. Simply write an article related to your sites topic and submit it to a major article directory like Ezinearticles. This will add credibility in the eyes of your visitors and also your search engine rankings will improve as you get more inbound links.
Adsense:
Adsense is another fantastic program to make money online. This program is really for those that have or are planning to create sites that will get good amounts of traffic. All you need to do is place the adsense in the right way so you can maximize the income from it.
Ensure that your ads blend in with the general appearance of your site and do not stand out. Make the links of your ads have the same color as the links in your site and also ad some ads right in the main content of your website like in the middle of an article.
Place some ads in your main content by having the words wrap around the ads. Avoiding the banner adsense format is often a good idea because it has a history of poor performance. Get started with one or both of these approaches today and be well on your way to making big money from the internet.

Can You Make Money Online? (debunking The Myths)

By Maurice Snell

Millions have tried, millions are trying right now and millions will continue to try in the years ahead. There is so much misinformation out there regarding making money online, that you can easily be forgiven for thinking that all these millions are enjoying unbridled success.
The real truth of course is that the vast majority are failing. Their hopes of earning a healthy living from home are usually shattered before they have even begun. There is no single reason for this. It's usually down to a combination of factors, and I intend to look at some of the reasons for the now infamous quote, "95% of people fail in their online business". Some of the things I list below will doubtless be contested by many people but the harsh facts are that making money online, whilst entirely possible, is not the cakewalk that a lot of people will try to convince you it is.
So, let's get down to debunking some of the nonsense - hopefully this will save a lot of people a lot of time and frustration.
1) Affiliate Marketing - so much rubbish is spouted by so many people who have never made an affiliate sale in their lives. The affiliate marketing model is indeed a powerful one and has made a number of people very wealthy. However, you are very unlikely to succeed with affiliate marketing without going through an arduous and sometimes lengthy learning process.
A huge swathe of articles you read about affiliate marketing are no more than rehashed PLR articles being used by lame hopefuls who are incapable of writing anything original on a subject that they are hoping to convince you they know all about. You can spot these peddlers of fifth hand information easily enough - look at the sites they link to, check their traffic rankings. Ninety Nine times out of a hundred you will find a cookie cutter website just like thousands of others or a direct link to an affiliate program that they foolishly believe you will sign up for having read their blindingly convincing pitch.
Are they the people to look to for advice? Think before you answer.......
2) Freebie Seekers and Freeloaders - this encompasses so many people it's laughable. They talk about their "business" and seriously expect others to follow their blind lead. The term "business", at least to my mind, indicates some sort of investment on behalf of the owner of that business - both in terms of time and money. Those most guilty of this faux pas are usually those who sign up to a free program, usually in the network marketing or MLM arena, and use every useless and pointless form of promotion as long as it's free.
Much is said regarding failure rates in MLM schemes being so high, but one of the biggest is the freebie mentality. Don't get sucked into believing you will ever make money online this way. The freeloaders are kidding themselves, but don't let them kid you. The programs they sign up to for free often offer a paid upgrade and they live in hope (if they ever manage to recruit a single person of course) that they will grow fat on the subscriptions of others. Naturally this rarely happens, simply because they advertise to other freeloaders who have no intention of spending any money on their "business" either, and so the viscious circle continues.
If you don't believe me, visit any free traffic exchange and look at some of the webpages circulating there. These people are dreamers - they will never make money online until they accept that they are eventually going to have to spend money to make money. Let's get real here - when you're looking for potions or energy drinks or some other latest greatest product that is no more than a copy of an already well established brand, is the first place you think to look going to be a free classified site on the internet? Maybe you'd head for the closest traffic exchange? Think - you don't have to do it for more than a few seconds to see why these things do not work!
3) Throwing up a blog on a free platform and filling it up with Adsense or other PPC ads is unlikely to deliver much success. This applies whether we are talking one blog or fifty blogs. Adsense is great, but it's also a numbers game - you need big numbers in terms of pages and visitors to make big returns. By big, I mean big - tens of thousands of pages receiving tens of thousands of visitors and you will probably start making a nice income. Throwing up fifty, a hundred or more useless blogs or splogs won't work even if some people tell you that all you need are a couple of Adsense clicks a day on each one and you'll be raking in the money. Great theory, but you won't get the traffic to even generate those occasional clicks in the first place. Throwing up such poor quality free pages will achieve nothing - in fact, you're more likely to get banned from Blogger and Adsense to boot if you're not careful. Oh, and don't think you'll be smart and use auto surf sites to rack up huge numbers of impressions - using any kind of traffic exchange in conjunction with Adsense will get you banned very quickly.
Our freebie seekers of course will tell you otherwise, expecting you to believe that their PR0 blog with no comments is really generating a thosand dollars for them every month, and that all you need to do is visit this or that site, where you can learn to do exactly the same. You will naturally be directed to a page through an affiliate link - Clickbank or similar - to purchase an ebook that the freebie seeker has naturally never laid eyes on, let alone read.
4) Making millions with PPC advertising. This is a no brainer - all you have to do is pick some keywords, write a snappy ad, link to an affiliate program and gve your credit card details to Google, Yahoo, MSN or whoever. You will wake up rich beyond your wildest dreams.
OK, maybe too heavy on the sarcasm, but it's really not that easy. Ask anyone who has rushed blindly into PPC and lost their shirt in the process, paying for a truckload of clicks but generating nary a sale. I have a little more sympathy for these types than the freeloaders; after all, they have accepted that they need to spend money to make money, but unless you do your homework, it's likely to prove costly. Even if you do your research beforehand, there are no guarantees that PPC campaigns will work for your business. Having said all that, PPC can be a very profitable tool, just don't believe overly hyped claims from the totally inexperienced.
5) Start a blog and you will soon be collecting checks on a regular basis. Don't believe this one either. There is a lot to be said for blogs as a marketing tool, don't get me wrong. Blogs can and do increase your exposure tremendously, but apart from an elite few, blogs are usually not their direct revenue generators. A blog is a tool, and used wisely it will help an online business to grow, but it's unlikely to pay the bills all by itself.
6) Article marketing - another area where a lot of ill informed and overly hyped prose is written. As a long term strategy, carried out correctly, article marketing can be hugely beneficial to a business of any kind, but it takes time to see results and there is a learning curve to go through.
I actually saw someone advocating the tactic of blanket bombing article directories with PLR articles and slapping affiliate links into the resource box. This was in an article submitted to one of my directories. They even went as far as to claim that this would guarantee a huge number of hits and sales. This is just one piece of foolish nonsense from a clueless fool, who, no doubt is wondering why article marketing is so useless, whilst trying to tell others how rich it will make them. It is a fact that most article directories do not permit linking directly to affiliate programs in the resource box! It follows that this is hardly the way to proceed.
7) Work from home opportunities have become a breeding ground for scams and hucksters the world over. Global oppportunities for peddlers of schemes and tricks to make themselves rich have never been more plentiful.
There are several "opportunities" circulating at the moment that are borderline illegal and when they disappear into the ether there will no doubt be plenty to replace them.
Promises of overnight riches rarely hold much water if you examine them even superficially. Just because you see a video of someone opening envelopes full of cash does not make it so. One "gifting" program of this nature has obviously sucked in a fair number of gullible souls who really believe that people will be queuing up to send them three thousand dollars just because they show them a poor quality video on a traffic exchange.
Have you ever managed to sell a product online for three thousand dollars or more? I'm guessing the answer in most cases is - probably not. If you fall for this kind of scam, you probably deserve to get rooked - after all, how difficult is it for someone to get three thousand in cash (there are plenty of ways), go to FedEx, mail it to themselves and then film it's arrival and subsequent opening on a webcam. If that's all the proof it takes to convince you, you have some painful lessons to learn.
Whenever you read outlandish claims offering boatloads of money and retirement before you've even started working, in conjunction with proclamations that you don't have to sell anything, don't have to advertise, don't have to do anything at all really, other than sit back and watch the money roll in.....and you find yourself believing it - my advice is to seek professional help.
8) Making money with sites that pay you to read ads, emails, visit sites, sign up for free offers etc etc etc I'm not saying that none of them work but in terms of time expended set against financial reward, they are usually a dismal prospect. Would you go and do a job for $20 a month?
There you have just eight of countless things that you should not believe. Trust me there are plenty more.
If you are serious about making money online, you are going to need a plan. You are going to have to spend some money to get yourself set up to do business. You will need a website of your own for starters (unless you intend to buy a hundred ebooks and courses telling you how to succeed without even this most basic of needs). This means hosting fees. If you are starting from a position of very little technical knowledge, you will have to dedicate a lot of time to learning the ropes or you will have to pay for the services of others. With most things online, the sooner you bow to the inevitability of having to lay out a little cash as you go along, the sooner you will start to open up some real possibilities.
There are countless ways to make money online, there are many people who are living proof of this, but try not to get caught up in the rubbish.
I have not mentioned things like stock or currency trading simply because they are not scams. Trading online can be lucrative and you won't need a website of your own for this kind of venture but you will need capital, and you need to understand the risks, which are not insignificant.
However that's all a subject for another day. As grandpa said, free advice is often pretty much worth what you pay for it. Just be careful what you believe in your quest for online wealth and you'll avoid a lot of wasted time and disappointments.
There IS plenty off free information on the internet and there are also plenty of free tools and software and services that may help you - but - you are starting a business and business means you will need some business capital to get off the ground. If you think otherwise and persist in looking for the elusive, no cost magic bullet, you are destined to fail and I don't care what any rehashed nonsense some self help book tells you about irrefutable laws of nature or anything else. You need to do a lot more than just dream about online success if you wish to achieve it.
A closing thought - money may well make the world go round. If nobody spends any, nobody receives any. If you can find me something that disproves that 100%, tell me where to sign up.

Want To Know The Secret Of Making Money Online?

By : Darrell Knox

If you learn how other people make money online, I mean really study how it's done and ask a lot of questions, there is no reason in the world you cannot make money on the internet as well. How do people make money with websites? There are literally tens of thousands of things people make money on from the net. From hard goods of all kinds (anything that can be shipped, including cars and boats!) to information and memberships.
People make money selling insurance, car parts, reports on every imaginable topic people want to know more about, selling affiliate products, and even fundraising for charity!
That's right! People make money helping their favorite charities raise money. By creating an in-demand product for a charity to sell to their members, and letting them keep at least 50%, you can make money as a professional fundraiser.
I know someone who makes money selling a dog biscuit and dog food cookbook! That's right, a cookbook for dog lovers to make treats for their pets. I told you! Anything goes on the net as long as there are buyers looking for what you sell.
It's truly mind boggling how some people make money online. You just have to be creative and understand how the net works and how people shop online. You have to know how to get into the search engines so people can find you.
And most of all you need a couple of good ideas, or find other people with great ideas and sell THEIR stuff for commission! There is no excuse for failure - the world of internet marketing is your oyster!
There are tons of resource sites that can help you understand every single minute detail of making money online from setting up a website to choosing a hosting service to taking credit cards and filling orders. There's nothing else like it in the world.
I have a site that helps people find ways to make money online. I make money with information products, and help others learn how to make money online doing the same thing.
Some people make money on Ebay auctioning things people are searching for right now all over the world. Still other people sell their time as Virtual Assistants helping busy executives and other business owners complete mundane but important tasks the business owner has no time to do.
With some referrals, over time you can be busier than you ever imagined with clients beating down your door because they heard you do great work at reasonable rates. All this without ever meeting ANY of your clients face-to-face. Working online makes working for people in other countries a snap, as long as you speak the language, it's no different than if the person you sell to or work with lives right down the street.
Bottom line: You CAN make money online if you are the type of person who is a self-starter and motivated to work toward your goals even when the going gets tough.

Ten Tips for Choosing the Right Internet Business

Use these guidelines to help you hone in on the perfect internet business to meet your skills and income needs
Ten Tips for Choosing the Right Internet Business
1. Don't quit your day job - Since there are no guarantees in life, it doesn't make sense to quit your day job until your internet business has proved it can replace the income your day job provides. Even then, you may want to keep your day job.
2. Understand that internet businesses fail - As proven by the dot com collapse, there is nothing 'magical' about having a business on the internet that guarantees success. In fact, most attempts at creating profitable businesses on the internet have failed. Even the big companies that have poured billions into their internet businesses have seen the majority of their efforts fail.
Don't let this discourage you - just understand that failure is more frequent than success.
3. Establish your working parameters - Before you start evaluating different internet businesses, clearly establish your working parameters. Define how many hours a day, week, or month you are willing to work on the business. Define how much money you can afford to invest in start up costs. Define how many employees (if any), you are willing to take on and manage - (it was 2 years before I took on a part time member of staff), and define your exit strategy.
It is a good idea to discuss these parameters with your spouse or family partners before you set them in stone. Their input is important to your success.
4. Define your goals - Define what you want to accomplish with your internet business. How much income must the business generate before it is a success? How much a day, a week, a month, a year?
The amount of income you desire directly impacts which business models you choose.
5. Review the business models that have proven successful on the internet - The recent shakeout on the internet has left only a relatively few businesses standing. By looking at the survivors, we can see that a few business models seem to work well on the internet, while others have little chance of success.
Those business models that work well include:
* Subscription sites - charging a membership or subscription fee in return for providing access to a web site
* Applications on tap - charging a fee to use a product or service on the net
* Specialised software - developing and marketing specialized software to fit the special needs of higher end customers
* Support services - offering products, tools, templates, training on how to improve internet businesses
* eBay sales - selling items on eBay, either your own products, or working as an eBay Trading Assistant helping others sell their items.
The common denominator in all the above business models is the product is information or service based, and is delivered over the web. Choose a business model built on this and you have a much better chance of success.
6. Avoid business models that are failure prone - The massive failure of so many well-funded internet business ventures has shown the following business models should be avoided:
* Any business model that involves the physical delivery of products with minimal profit margins. Don't try to sell dog food, groceries, furniture, or other widely available products via the net.
* Any business model that puts you in direct competition with Tesco, Amazon, Dell, or eBay. These larger companies can do it better, they can buy products cheaper, they have deeper pockets, and can sell at a loss longer than you can. The only way to win - don't compete with them.
* Any business model where you buy wholesale, and try to sell retail. The margins are too slim, too much volume is required to make a profit. (If in doubt, ask Amazon.)
For the best chance of success choose a business model where you create or own the product you sell, the product is delivered digitally, you have little direct competition, customers can order online, and a single copy of the same product can be sold many times.
7. Evaluate your goals and parameters against each of the successful business models - Since it will be you who actually has to spend the hours working on your internet business, it should be you who decides which of the business models mentioned above best fit your time, talent, and desires. Some business models will produce lower incomes, but will require less work. While others will require much more work, but can produce much higher income.
Be sure to take into account how you might become a 'prisoner of your own success' if you choose a business model that requires your full time attention as your business grows.
8. Don't overlook the obvious - You may already have the skills, expertise, inside knowledge, or niche hobby interest that could be the basis for a great internet business. For example, if you have several years experience running a bed & breakfast, then you might want to consider offering an internet based information product for those wanting to open their own bed & breakfast (a newsletter, a subscription web site, a buy/sell service, etc.)
9. Be careful who you take advice from - There are a lot of people offering advice on the subject of creating a successful online business. The only problem - the vast majority of these people haven't had any success in creating or running their own online business. Most just jump into the advice or 'guru' business because it seems like an easy thing to do.
If you want to rely on gurus to lead you down the path, be sure they've been down the path themselves.
10. Listen to your heart and your head - Get involved with those businesses that make you happy and give you a reason to get up each morning. Avoid the 'sounds too good to be true' pitches, and the 'I wouldn't do this, but I really need the money' excuses. Keep your priorities straight - family, health, spirit, community, and then, business.
One final tip - often it is a lot easier to get into a business than it is to get out of it.
Choose your business with as much diligence as you would choose a wife or husband. Because in the long run you may end up spending as much time with your business as you do with your spouse!
